Congratulations to Bethany 4-H president Makalah Adams on being selected for the November volunteer spotlight in KOOP Radio's newsletter.  Makalah is not only president of her 4-H Club but she also finds time to volunteer for the radio station and her program can be heard on Tuesdays from 2:00 to 2:30 PM.

Volunteer Spotlight November
by Martha Louise Hunter, co-host of Writing on the Air
She’s just 16, and she hosts her own radio show. That’s right. 16.  Her name’s Makalah. Her show is What’s Your Status?

She was 14 when she joined KOOP in late 2012, after learning about the KOOP program, Youth Spin.  Next, after trying out her concept, Teen Summer Status on Youth Spin, she campaigned and won a spot on the KOOP lineup with What’s Your Status?  Not too shabby. Initially an hour-long online program, What’s Your Status? now airs Tuesdays from 2:00-2:30 pm.

“Producing your own show can be tiring at times,” Makalah says. “But it really pays off.”

For Makalah, the best thing about being on the radio is that she’s able to reach so many people. “To me, the microphone is your stage, and it’s like performing for an audience you can’t always see,” she says. “I’ve been told people can feel my smile through their speakers, sometimes.”  Makalah adds a youthful, yet serious spike to the Austin airwaves. She highlights her passion for music, activism and health on the show via these segments:

"In The Studio" -- Interviews with entertainers from Texas and beyond;
“The A-Game” – Interviews with leaders, advocates, and entrepreneurs of all ages;
“Just a Thought” -- Makalah’s personal commentary on varying topics; and
“Healthy Living” – Mental and physical health features

So, how does someone like Makalah become interested in being on the radio?  “As a small child, I grew up with radio and music all around me, listening to everything from KMFA to The Beat 102.3.” When she was about eight, Makalah’s mom booked a tour for them at KMFA. “I’ll never forget meeting some of the hosts, seeing their music catalog, and their “Wilson” collectable from the Cast Away merchandise,” she says. “In the 3rd grade, I’d record myself and my favorite songs using an old mp3 player. Come to think of it, that was my first podcast!”

Tune in to hear this young and dynamic radio journalist and music coordinator for yourself and you’ll see that she’s come a long way! That’s What’s Your Status? --  Tuesdays from 2:00 – 3:30 pm
